An NBA preview needs more than the starting five

The opening lineup is one combination. Rotation patterns and shared responsibilities help frame what to watch beyond tip-off.

The starters do not explain the whole game

An NBA starting lineup identifies the group selected to open the game. It does not establish the final distribution of minutes or the combination that will finish. Some players carry an early organising responsibility, while others become especially important in the periods between substitutions. When reading a preview, distinguish the confirmed lineup from an expected rotation and from an editor’s own projection. Those categories can inform one another without becoming interchangeable. A useful preview leaves room for facts that have not yet been confirmed.

Ask how different combinations connect

Consider who may handle the ball when a primary creator rests, who maintains spacing and who takes responsibility for rebounding. Another question is whether major organisers are likely to share most of their minutes or spend time leading different groups. These are questions about combinations rather than a ranking of individual talent. The same player can face different defensive attention and perform different tasks alongside different teammates. A position label alone cannot describe all of that work. Look for an explanation of the jobs a lineup needs to perform.

Allow the game to change the plan

Foul situations, the score, matchups and a player’s condition can all influence substitution choices. A projected rotation is therefore a viewing guide, not a guaranteed sequence. When assessing a group, note the stage of the game, the opposing personnel and the task the group was asked to solve. This produces a more informative observation than declaring that a combination will automatically succeed.
