Bench units do more than preserve scoring. Watch who organises possession, who supports away from the ball and how defensive responsibilities fit together.
What to observe
Identify who advances the ball and initiates the possession, then look for the available passing connections. A player can contribute without handling the ball. Spacing, screening and an early extra pass can make a teammate’s next decision easier.
How to read the sequence
Watch the transition after possession changes. Who protects the basket, finds a match-up or temporarily fills an uncovered space? Those actions reveal responsibilities. One communication error is not a complete assessment of an individual defender.
Limits and checks
Retain opponent and game-phase context when comparing units. A short scoring run may reflect shooting variation or a change in the opposing lineup. Record the visible collaboration separately from the outcome so that your assessment can be checked against further possessions.
